Ventura Speedway, Ventura Ca. USAC Ford Focus Series

Heat race, start position 4th, finish position 2nd

Feature, start position 2nd, Finish position 1st

Saturday October 17 Cody Swanson headed back up to Ventura for the 2nd to last race of the USAC Ford Focus California dirt series race. “This track has always been a little tough for me” said Cody. “This is where I had my first start on dirt and have run well at times but could never just seal the deal”.  Cody Started the heat race in the 4th position and quickly raced his way up to second behind the #4 car which is how the 8 lap race ended. As the night progressed, the track became very rough! Several cars in the midget and sprint car races flipped. Some of them before the race was able to go green! Cody watched the races leading up to the Focus feature and then made some last minute tire pressure and shock setting changes before heading onto the track. He started off pole in 2nd position. On the first lap coming out of turn 4, Cody took over the lead with his GOODWINE Glass, K&N Engineering, and LUCAS oil Products #71car! “The track had a HUGE rut in the middle of turns 3 and 4, if you were off of the line just a few inches you would end up directly in it” Cody stated. “I could hear my Driving coach Wally Pankratz in my head, Drive the race track!” The race went caution free as the rest of the field was fighting  one another for position and Cody extended his lead to just over a straight away. “I thought for sure that Jake and the 91 car would be on my tail, I was surprised when I found out how big a lead I had. I was just trying to stay smooth and clean and hit the ruts just right” Cody said. Cody’s cousin and teammate Jake did a great job of weeding his way through the pack to claim 2nd position. With Cody’s 3rd win of the year and 2nd in a row, he was able to nail down 2nd position in the series points standings.

“It never gets old thanking my great sponsors!” Cody said. “Phil Goodwine and family, Thanks for the apple sauce cup cakes Grandma Goodwine, K&N Engineering, My K&N filters are easy to service and I know that my engine will breath all it needs with K&N! LUCAS oil products, I knew during that caution free race that my engine would not fail due to oil pressure! Jeff Wahl of Edmunds auto research, It was great to see you back out at the track! Wally Pankratz my driving coach has helped me so much this year, The Van Dynes and the whole Swanson Motorsports family! Thank you”

Cody has one more USC Ford Focus series race to go, back at Ventura on the 21st of November.

Hopefully he can bring home win #4!

Cody Swanson’s race report for 10-3-09

Cody was supposed to be returning to Kings Speedway in Hanford on the 3rd of October and race his GOODWINE glass, K&N Engineering, LUCAS oil products Focus midget. “I was looking forward to going back to Kings” stated Cody, “We were able to bring home the win from there last time and I knew that we would be good going back!” Unfortunately USAC and the track had a disagreement and the Focus race was cancelled during the week. Cody planned on going up to help his cousin Jake in the Western States USAC midget race. That All changed late Friday when Tres Van Dyne called to ask Cody if he would like to drive his car in the “Cotton Classic midget race”  and make his Western States USAC midget debut. “I couldn’t say YES fast enough! I have been testing with the Van Dynes in their QTM brakes, Van Dyne BEAST pavement car in preparation to race it, but this was a surprise! Dad and I drove down Friday night so that I could get in the car and make sure I was fitted and comfortable” Cody said.

The first laps at speed for Cody were “hot laps” and then it was time for qualifying. Cody qualified 13th in the 21 car field, respectable for his first time! During the heat race Cody learned very quickly how aggressive the Western Sates drivers are and how good your car has to be. Cody started on pole in the 7 car field with Cousin Jake 2nd. Jake quickly jumped to the lead and held it to the finish. Cody’s car was just loose to hold it down and as he would slide up the track and get passed. He finished the heat in 5th position.

Due to USAC’s rookie rule, Cody had to start the feature in last position. At the drop of the green he quickly started make his way up but each time he would get past a couple of cars, the caution flag would fly which meant that he would have to give the positions back for the restarts. During one of the red flag sessions, there were two! Tres talked to Cody and then made some adjustments to the car. Once the race got going again Cody raced his way up to tenth position. On lap 12 in turn one, as Cody slid up towards the cushion the car bicycled very hard and jumped the cushion. Upon landing the two bolts which secure the left rear hairpin to the bird cage sheared and Cody’s race was over.

“I want to say a huge thank you to Tres and Stewart Van Dyne for asking me to drive the Van Dyne/Drake-Offy, QTM brakes, Edmunds Auto Research #5 car. I wish we could have finished all of the laps but I still learned a lot and had a blast! Thanks also to my driving coach Wally Pankratz for the last minute tips and advice. Thanks also to my personal sponsors for helping me get in the position to be asked to drive for the Van Dynes, Phil Goodwine and GOODWINE glass, K&N Engineering Inc. and LUCAS oil products. The Van Dyne car runs Lucas racing oil and K&N breather and oil filters so it was a perfect fit. I look forward to being able to run with the Van Dynes some more.”

Cody’s next Ford Focus race will be October 17th at Ventura Speedway where he hopes to be able to secure 2nd in year end points with one more race left in the season back at Ventura in November.

Hanford Kings Speedway

Heat race start position 5th, finished 2nd

25 lap Feature start position 5th, finished 1st

Saturday September 12th the Swanson Motorsports team headed back up to the central valley and Kings Speedway in Hanford Ca. The USAC Ford Focus cars would be running on the big 3/8ths mile track this time. “I was a little bummed about running on the big track “Cody stated. “I liked the tight racing on the small track and felt we had a good package heading back there. We talked to my driving coach Wally Pankratz before we headed up and got some last minute advice” During hot laps, it became evident that Cody’s GOODWINE Glass, K&N Engineering, LUCAS oil #71 had a pretty good set-up for the 3/8ths mile also!

For the heat race, Cody would start in the 5th position. The heat was a clean race with no real drama and he drove to a 2nd place finish. Brody Roa, a former karting competitor of Cody finished 1st in his #91 car.

With the 6 car invert, Cody started the feature in 5th position. Before the 1st lap was complete, Cody had taken the lead coming out of turn four! “I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was like they all knew I was coming and just moved out of my way. I was in second by turn two and then passed my cousin Jake in the 88 car coming out of turn four” stated Cody. “ It must have been the horse power from My K&N filters and the Lucas oils in my car” Cody continued to set the pace until lap 11 when the 91 car was able to keep his car low going into turn one and take away the position. Cody continued to lose some time to the #91 as the track dried out more each lap. “At about lap 16 I was able to get my shocks adjusted enough to make my car better in the dry conditions, all I needed now was a caution!” On lap 20 the red came out for the flip of Walt Johnson in the #95. “During the red I was in my own personal battle to adjust my shocks more or not! Finally I decided to go for it and adjust them further” Cody  Said with a big smile. It turns out to be the best move he could have done. On the 1st lap of the restart Cody turned his car under the 91 in turn 3 and never looked back taking the checkered with a 7 car lead!

“This is so awesome!” Cody said as he sprang from his car at the start finish line. “I have never seen a track that changed so much during a race.  I have so many people to thank for helping me get here. Phil Goodwine and family from GOODWINE Glass, without his support, I don’t know where we would be, K&N Engineering has provided the air filters, oil filters and breather filters for me since my early days of kart racing, Lucas oils officially came on board this year and it performs flawlessly,  Jeff Stiller & JTS Financial services. So many more, My driving coach Wally Pankratz who has taught me so much this year, Tres Van Dyne & Van Dyne Engineering,  my cousin Jake and Uncle Chris for all of their help, all of my family and friends, thank you everybody!”

Cody and his Swanson Motorsports team will be headed back to Kings speedway on the 3rd of October for the next USAC Ford Focus race, stay tuned.

The following Wednesday the team traveled to Ventura with the GOODWINE glass, K&N filters, Lucas oil products Ford Focus midget. “We started the main in the 8th position and worked through traffic to finish in 5th place track that is very tough to pass on” Cody said. The team headed into the final race of series at Kings Speedway in Hanford tied for 3rd in points with Nick Carlson in the 19 car. This was the first dirt race of the season in which the starting lineup would be set by qualifying times with the top six cars inverted for the main event. “Dad and I discussed briefly about trying to play the invert and qualify 6th”, Cody said. “But I decided I didn’t want to play the games and wanted to go for it! Cody tests in Van Dyne midget

E-mail Print PDF

7-23-09

Tuesday July 21st Tres Van Dyne called me to see if I was available to test his USAC Western States midget along with Wally Pankratz in his USAC Ford Focus. They were testing some new components for QTM brakes. Tres had mentioned to me last time we were at Hanford for the USAC Ford Focus race that he would like me to come out with them and I was looking forward to it very much! The Van Dyne midget is a BEAST powered by a Rodeck/Chevy and makes about 350HP!

back strech.jpg - 132.59 Kb

My Ford Focus makes about 180HP so needless to say this car is WAY faster than my Focus! This wasn’t my first time in a full midget; I drove a BEAST powered by an Esslinger/Ford during the DMS driver’s challenge. The Van Dyne car was very comfortable and I think it has more torque than the Esslinger/Ford combo. As it turned out, the day pretty much turned into a driving school as Wally watched every lap I turned and would then talk to me about my lines and take me around the track in his truck to explain the lines better. img_1562.jpg - 162.88 Kb

By the end of the day I picked up a full second and ran consistent 12:30’s and 40’s. Tres, Wally and Kevin from QTM brakes were great to work with all day and valued my opinions on what I thought the car was doing. This is the 1st time that I have been involved in a test session like this and I am grateful to Kevin and QTM brakes, Wally Pankratz and Tres Van Dyne for giving me this opportunity. They told me that they want me to test with them some more and now Tres, My Dad and I are talking about racing the Van Dyne midget up to three times before the end of the season! Tres already uses K&N oil and breather filters and LUCAS oils in the Van Dyne midget, now we just need to change out the air filter and we’ll be set!

My next USAC For Focus race will be on August 1st at the Perris auto speedway followed by the “fair” race at Ventura on the 5th and then off to Hanford to race on the 8th. It is going to be a busy week!

Stay tuned!
